Local Girl Scouts being creative this cookie season

ALPENA, Mich. – It’s a new year and what better way to start it out than with Girl Scout cookies!

Can you smell those Lemonades, Short breads and Thin mints?

Girl Scout cookie season is in effect, but this year scouts in Alpena are doing things a bit differently.

The mother of 4th grade Junior Girl Scot Gwenn Dikeman took to Facebook to be creative and reach family and friends.

Due to the pandemic, gone are the days of knocking door to door or setting up shop at mom or dad’s job.

“I would like for it to be over,” said Unit 430 Girl Scout Service Director Evonne Jasman.” Especially because it’s hard not seeing the girls in our troops.”

Jasmine said locally Girl Scouts are doing all they can to keep the tradition going.

Girl Scout Makenzi Mousseau said cookie season has helped her grow.

“It definitely gives a different skill set to be able to teach and work with the younger girls,” said Mousseau.

This year Mosseau and other scouts in the area are trying to be as inventive as possible, pandemic style, revamping their normal cookie booths to meet the needs of staying safe.

“Some troops will probably have drive thru cookie booths,” said Jasman.

Little miss Gwenn Dikeman who’s resorted to reaching her cookie sale goals via Facebook said she hopes things go back to normal petty soon.

“I like to interact with girl scouts because I think it’s really fun and I like to learn new things,” said Dikeman.

Nationally, the organization has even partnered with Grubhub for cookie deliveries where available and you can also order from a Girl Scout online.

Jasman said she hopes to have the troops she’s involved with host cookie booths at Walmart this spring.

Jasman said they are still looking for additional places for booths where they can practice proper social distancing guidelines.

Pre-order sales for cookies ended January 31st, while cookies are set for delivery in early march.
