Local fire department educate students during fire prevention month

ALPENA, Mich.—October is fire prevention month and the Alpena Fire Department is making their rounds virtually to area elementary schools to educate students on fire safety.

Starting next week, K through 2nd grade students will have the opportunity to interact with a local fire fighter and virtually tour a fire truck. Students will also receive tips on the importance of kitchen safety.

According to Risk Reduction Officer Andy Marceau, more students specifically teenagers are staying home and cooking more. Marceau also reminds residents to never leave food on the stove unattended.

Always keep objects such as  towels or napkins away from hot surfaces. Lastly, make sure to use a lid when cooking with grease.
