Lake effect snow ends overnight; More snow moves in early Wednesday

Lake effect snow showers have been ongoing across much of Northern Michigan this afternoon and evening. Those will come to an end overnight as drier air moves in. Tuesday is looking partly cloudy thanks to an area of high pressure currently in western Iowa that will bring some clearing. A storm system currently over the southwestern states will move toward the Great Lakes and spread snow into our area well before daybreak early Wednesday.

Here’s what looks to unfold with the storm system coming from the southwestern U.S.: Snow will begin late Tuesday night/very early Wednesday. Periods of steady snow are expected throughout the predawn-morning hours. Expect slow and slick road conditions during Wednesday morning, so allow extra travel time and extra space ahead of you. In the early afternoon, temperatures will likely become warm enough to see a change to a rain/snow mix. Then the rain/snow mix will come to an end in the late-afternoon.

Tuesday: Partly cloudy, a cool morning. Predawn temperatures will head down to the lower teens. Temperatures will rise to the lower 20s in the late-morning. Afternoon highs will be near 27 degrees. Evening temperatures will settle around 20 degrees.

Wednesday: Snow begins early, then a rain/snow mix possible in the afternoon. Temperatures will already be rising to the middle 20s in the predawn hours. Afternoon highs will get up to 36 degrees. Evening temperatures will be in the lower 30s.

Thursday: Mostly cloudy. Early-morning temperatures will be in the middle 20s. Afternoon highs will reach about 31 degrees. Evening temperatures will be in the middle/lower 20s.

A storm system from the Gulf of Mexico coast will travel northbound later this week. This looks to bring some messy, wintry weather to Northeast Michigan New Year’s Day. The current outlook calls for a mix of snow/sleet/ice Friday afternoon-evening, but stay tuned to further updates on this late-week storm system as details may change between now and Friday.
