Lafarge asks for grant for infrastructure project

ALPENA, Mich. — At this week’s City Council meeting Harbormaster Shannon Smolinski announced the request for a grant on behalf of Lafarge.  Lafarge approached the harbor because grant awards can only be awarded to bodies of government.  The grant will help Lafarge’s current project of improving their docs and offloading.

Smolinski said they are competing with approximately 150 other government units but feels Lafarge would qualify for the grant.  The grant request is in the amount of 5 million dollars.  She adds that being a port in need on the Great Lakes and having an infrastructure project looks promising.
