Hurons sweep Hillman in home opener

Rogers City, Mich. — The Rogers City Hurons held their home opener against the Hillman Tigers for a double-header. It was a beautiful, sunny day for spring sports.

The Hurons’ state semifinalist softball squad started off with some hot bats once the first three batters were walked. Jeffra Dittmar’s blooper past third sent home Makenna Fessler and Taylor Fleming on her birthday for the 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Catheryn Hart nearly hit a home run bringing home Amanda Wirgau.

Junior pitcher Kyrsten Altman would add a home run in the third to help the Hurons take game one 8-1. Altman pitched a complete game throwing 13 strikeouts and allowing one run. Rogers City and Hillman faced off for game two where the Hurons again won 8-1 with the help of Taylor Flemings’ home run.

For baseball, Rogers City and Hillman took the diamond for a double-header. The Tigers had the 4-0 lead until the bottom of the second. Rogers City’s Michael Karsten hit a 2 RBI single, bringing home Matt Wilbert and Jaylen Fleming.

Hillman changes pitchers, but that didn’t stop Lewis Fleming from hitting a 3-run homer for the go-ahead 5-4 lead. Rogers City would go on to win 12-4. The Hurons won the double-header 11-1 in game two.
