Hundreds turn out for ice fishing contest

PRESQUE ISLE, Mich. — Northeast Michiganders demonstrated their tolerance for cold at more than just the ice fest on Saturday.

Fishers of all ages cut their hole in the ice for the Grand Lake Sportsmen’s Club’s ice–fishing derby. Despite the brutal temperatures, hundreds of people waited for that telltale tug on their fishing line, hoping for the big one.

Club member terry McConnell told WBKB it almost felt like pre–pandemic times.

“[My favorite part is] getting people together, getting off this COVID stuff and enjoying the day and the festivities at night when we’re all weighing in.”

At the end of the day, Allen Wisnieski took first place in Pike with a 28.5–inch catch; Kyle Kensa brought in the largest Walleye at 20.25 inches; and Cari Orr caught the largest Perch: 13 5/8 inches long.
