Humane Society mourns for dog

ALPENA, Mich.– Stewie, the Huron Humane Society’s beloved dog, passed away Wednesday night.

Stewie first arrived at the shelter in 2010. He had a rough life before being rescued, so he was scared of men and kids. These fears and other behavioral issues left him difficult to adopt, so the Humane Society eventually brought him into their family.

Animal technician Alissa Myers said everyone loved Stewie.

“Every time he’d see you his little tail would wag and he’d do the whole body shuffle. And if you weren’t paying attention, he’d walk up and put a little paw on you– a little scratch. Once he got to know you… it was a connection I don’t see often, honestly.”

Myers said the Humane Society knew Stewie didn’t have much time left. The vet diagnosed him with cancer during a recent visit.

After he showed signs of discomfort and pain on Wednesday, his caretakers realized it was his time.

He passed peacefully at the age of 15
