How to become a keeper for the Tawas Point Lighthouse
ALPENA, Mich. — The Tawas Point Lighthouse has been in operation since 1876 and they are now accepting applications to become a keeper. This program lasts from May 6 – Oct. 7, allows the applicant a two week stay, and costs $75 per person.
Lodging is in the second story quarters of the building and has an overlook of the shores of Lake Huron. Accommodations include two bedrooms, a kitchen, shower and bath.
However this isn’t a vacation. The lighthouse keeper’s responsibilities include greeting visitors, giving tours, and performing basic facility management. About 35 hours of work per week are expected.
