Hospice of Michigan enlisting the help of veterans

ALPENA, Mich. — This country’s veterans share a special bond with one another and that’s why Hospice of Michigan is asking for their help with the “We Honor Veterans” program. They’re looking for people who can relate to the veterans in their care.  “What we really need veterans for is to interact with other veterans and provide companionship,” said Volunteer Program Manager, Kathy Lietaert.  “They may spend time visiting with the veteran, sharing stories, listening to the veteran tell stories that they maybe haven’t even shared with their own families before.”

Lietaert added that one in four patients they treated last year in Alpena were veterans, so there is a large number of people who could use this kind of support. “Somebody that can understand their story, somebody that can understand the experience they went through, or maybe someone who understands the military service in general and can relate.”

To find out how to apply you can visit their website at HOM.org or you can call Kathy Lietaert at (231) 779–5409.
