Hospice hosts Hemingway fundraiser

ALPENA, Mich. — The Hospice of Michigan hosted a unique fundraiser Saturday night.

People wore their Sunday best to the Besser Museum for an evening inspired by author and poet Ernest Hemingway.

Mixologist and Hemingway biographer Phillip Greene talked about the writer’s life and the drinks he likely enjoyed in his travels. Guests then tried the cocktails for themselves.

Filmmaker Cat Muncey also screened a clip from her upcoming film about her mother’s final months.

Organizer Melissa McDonald said the film shows that hospice care isn’t about doom and gloom.

“She created this documentary that shows end of life is not always meant to be sad. It can be amazing and living as well. And she’s taking us on that journey to show that to everybody.”

The event raised money for the Hospice’s Open Access program, which helps them provide care for people regardless of age, background, or ability to pay.

The event is one of several similar nights held across the region, based on Hemingway’s fondness for Northern Michigan
