One structure very near and dear to the hearts of Alpena, is being torn down. The historical green gate at Evergreen Cemetery has been around for decades. But today, the fond memory of that gate was ripped out of the ground.
“I’m 63 years old and its probably been there all my life that I remember,” said Phillip Dion, resident. “You know the green thing that has been painted numerous times, the bright green and um its just very historic i think. I don’t know why it would be taken down.”
Although staff at the cemetery refused to comment, workers from Alpena City Public Works say that it may be a result of the structure being very old and rusting–which could be a safety hazard.
“It’s a memory lost you know. I know I’m going to hate to see it go and what they replace it with,” said Dion.
We don’t know what the city plans to replace the gate with or if it will be replaced at all. WBKB News will keep you updated on the latest with this story.
