Gov. Whitmer announces preschool funding plan

ALPENA, Mich. — As Michigan parents head back to work, they will do so knowing their kids are in safe and productive learning environments.

Governor Whitmer proposed the Great Start Readiness Program on Tuesday.  The plan ensures that eligible four–year–old children have access to high quality, affordable early education.

Whitmer said this plan will help narrow the achievement gap between high and low–income students.

Whitmer adds that many kids face barriers such as being stuck on waitlists and access to incredible opportunities due to lack of funding.

The program provides services to children from families at or below a 250 percent poverty line.  An estimated 65,000 students are eligible for the program.
