Future Boys and Girls Club facility can fit twice the children

ALPENA, Mich. — The Boys and Girls Club of Alpena recently launched their Open New Doors Capital Campaign, where funding goes toward reshaping the former catholic central high school into a new youth facility.

“The goal is to build this beautiful facility for these kids,” said Robin Lalonde, a board member for the club. “If this kind of community support keeps rallying behind us, we’re going to get it. And it’s going to be incredible.”

The renovations will allow the club to serve nearly twice the amount of children in the community, and the new facility offers three times the space.

Recently, the club raised $11,000 through a fundraiser called “Big Beards for a Big Cause.” If the community support remains persistent, the facility will soon become a reality.

“This is a community project,” said Executive Director Brad Somers. “Our vision is not for this to be just for the Boys and Girls Club, but to open this facility up to other people in the community as well.”

The new building will bring a culinary center, technology lab, a new teen center, and more. The goal is to open the youth to opportunities they may not have even realized existed.

Somers and Lalonde predict the project to be done by the end of next year. Businesses and individuals wishing to contribute should contact Lalonde at robin.l.lalonde@medtronic.com or call 989-464-8855 for more information.
