Free throws spoil Alpena’s first game of 2019

ALPENA, MI — The Alpena Wildcats hosted the Escanaba Eskymos for their first game of 2019, and it ended in a 68-58 loss that came down to fouls and free throws. Alpena was off to a hot start. Mollie Girard put up three 3-pointers in the first half where the Wildcats totaled six.

Alpena was down 31-30 at halftime, but their third quarter slump and five fouls let the game slip away. The Eskymos outscored the Wildcats 16-8 in the third and made 16 of 24 free throws in the second half. Alpena matched up well in the fourth quarter. Abbie Funk knocked down two 3-pointers, but it was too late. Alpena is now (2-5) overall and (1-2) in the Big North Conference.

Up next, the Wildcats start their 5-game road trip against Traverse City Central on Thursday.
