Free Mammograms at MidMichigan Medical Center In Alpena

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Mid-Michigan Health offered free mammograms in October to over one hundred women in the area.

The requirements for the test were that women had to be forty years or older, without insurance, and had not been tested in the past year. Laurie Grommon, an Alpena resident, was one of the many participants who took advantage of the free mammogram from Mid-Michigan medical center in Alpena this October.

“Oh that was a relief because I guess I’m still trying to get my health insurance. I lost my husband a year ago so a lot of my income, insurance and things went with him so now I’m trying to get that on my own. So when they told me, it was just one less thing I had to worry about,” said Grommon.

The test Laurie received is an important step toward early detection of breast cancer. Many women who can’t afford insurance go without the yearly exam, making it much more difficult to treat if and when they do find they have breast cancer.

Development director of Mid-Michigan Medical Center in Alpena, Ann Diamond says the best part about the Mammography Subsidy Fund in Alpena that makes these free tests available is that all of the money comes straight from the pockets of the Alpena community. She also added that October is not the only time women can benefit from the free mammogram program.

“I just want to let people know too that the Mammography Subsidy Fund is open for women all through the year. It’s not just for Breast Cancer Awareness month; it’s not just for the screening day. We do have those funds available for women to use all year long,” Diamond added. Diamond encourages women who are in need of a mammogram to take advantage of the Mammography Subsidy Fund, and contact Mid-Michigan Medical Center Alpena to schedule an appointment.
