Follow CDC guidelines for making your own protective face covering

ALPENA, Mich. — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends wearing cloth face coverings in pubic settings such as grocery stores and pharmacies in an effort to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Whether you make your own mask or accept one donated from a friend, it is best to follow their guidelines on how to make and wear a protective face covering.

The CDC recommends cloth face coverings should—

  • fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face
  • be secured with ties or ear loops
  • include multiple layers of fabric
  • allow for breathing without restriction
  • be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape
