Farmers’ Market moves to new winter location

ALPENA, Mich.– The Alpena Farmers’ Market has officially moved indoors for the season. This year, however, they’ve found a new location.

The Performance Locker fitness center closed its doors a few months ago because of COVID–19. Now the farmers’ market is eying the building as their winter location.

The market has traditionally used the Alpena Mall in the winter, but director J.B. Cook said he wanted to try something new. Part of the reason is because the building was also once the warming center for the Alpena ice rink, a major part of Alpena’s community life.

“Hockey was and is one of the main sports of this town. And we hope to make this the center of the town again with the Farmers’ Market and other events that we hope to plan around this warming shelter again,” Cook said.

Cook said he hopes to eventually make the building part of the market year–round. In the meantime, local vendors will continue selling crafts, baked goods, and fresh produce every Saturday morning.

Masks are required for entry.
