Dry and remains warm Tuesday; Rain moves in Wednesday

High temperatures today got up to 59 degrees in Alpena — the first time above 50 degrees since November 29! West winds provided a land breeze with no influence off Lake Huron combined with sunshine helped lead to the warm temperatures. Elsewhere, highs reached 55 degrees in Traverse City, Michigan and 50 degrees in Ironwood, Michigan. Temperatures will become a little cooler Tuesday, but still well above normal for early March.

A high pressure system over southern Wisconsin is bringing mostly clear weather to our area this evening. Cloud cover will increase heading into Tuesday. Then a pair of low pressure systems over Wyoming and Utah will move east and bring rain to Northeast Michigan on Wednesday. Prior to the incoming rain, winds will pick up out of the south-southwest, leading to very warm temperatures for Wednesday. Warmth will remain in Thursday’s forecast as well.

Rain will begin around midday or early-afternoon on Wednesday and continue into the nighttime hours. Rainfall will be least near the shoreline in Iosco County and most toward the Tip of the Mitt. Amounts will range from about 0.1 inches in parts of Iosco County, around 0.3 inches in Alpena and up to about 0.5 inches in Presque Isle County. This map shows forecast rainfall amounts through Wednesday night.
