Dockside Cafe remains closed for a while

HARRISVILLE, Mich. — The investigation into the fire that happened at the Dockside CafĂ© two weeks ago has finished.  Both the owner of the cafĂ© and the owner of the apartment building next door talk about next steps.

The investigation from the Alcona County Sheriff’s office revealed that the fire started in the back of the Dockside CafĂ©.  Owner Rebecca Good said an inspector from her insurance company believes the fire was electrical and started in the restroom.  Good said the smoke and water significantly damaged the cafe and also affected the apartment next door.

Steve Arens, who owns the apartment building, said his tenants’ safety is his priority.  Arens added that he is concerned about the wall between both buildings and if there’s structural damage.  He said the last thing he wants is for someone to get hurt.

Arens said his next steps are to continue the investigation with structural engineers.

Good said the community has been very supportive and she even shared a story about a 92–year–old woman who frequented the café and wanted to help.

As for now, Good said it will be a while before Dockside opens its doors again but she looks forward to that day.
