PRESQUE ISLE, Mich. — District Health Department No. 4 has been notified of a confirmed case of the COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7 in Presque Isle County.

The individual completed isolation. The case was identified through routine active surveillance by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. In earlier surges, children — especially younger children — played only minor roles in transmitting the infection. When they were diagnosed with COVID-19, their symptoms tended to be mild or even absent, and for reasons that aren’t well understood, they haven’t usually been the first cases in households or clusters.

The B.1.1.7 variant spreads more easily and is believed to be more contagious. Now, as more coronavirus variants have begun to dominate, and seniors gain protection from vaccines, that pattern may be changing.

This is a rapidly evolving situation. Further updates will be shared with the media and on www.dhd4.org/covid19 and on Facebook.
