Cool this weekend; Heat surges in early next week

Today’s high reached 80 degrees in Alpena before showers with a cold front moved in. Elsewhere, highs reached 85 degrees in Saginaw and 74 degrees in Houghton. Colder temperatures are on the way this weekend as winds will shift out of the northwest.

Overnight lows will cool to about 51 degrees. Morning temperatures will be in the upper 50s. Saturday will be mostly sunny and breezy with highs around 71 degrees. Winds will be coming from the northwest, about 15 mph. Evening temperatures will be around 60 degrees.

Highs on Saturday will be in the lower 70s. It will get even cooler Sunday with highs in the middle 60s. Then winds will become out of the south Monday-Tuesday, which will bring much warmer temperatures. Highs will reach the middle or upper 70s Monday. Then Tuesday, temperatures will soar to the upper 80s (and some spots in Northeast Michigan could hit 90 degrees).

Tropical Storm Cristobal traveled into southern Mexico yesterday, briefly weakening to a tropical depression. The tropical storm is moving back into the Gulf of Mexico and will be heading northward. Saturday, it will be in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast is for landfall along the Louisiana coast late Sunday. It will then continue moving northward and become post-tropical (no longer showing the major signs of a tropical storm). The track of this storm system will result in rain for area Wednesday.

Saturday will be bright with highs in the lower 70s. Temperatures will drop to the middle 40s early Sunday. Highs will be around 66 degrees Sunday afternoon with mostly sunny skies. The weather will remain bright Monday with highs reaching about 76 degrees. The next chance of rain will move in early Wednesday.
