Con artists using new tricks
HOUGHTON LAKE, Mich. — Michigan State Police of Houghton Lake warns the community about con artists using new tricks. MSP said two victims of the same scam contacted the Houghton Lake Post to make a report.
The scam involves obtaining a victim’s personal information under false pretenses to gain access to their computer or banking details. The suspect will contact the victim saying they have a subscription to something that will be automatically renewed for a couple of hundred dollars.
Once the victim says they don’t have a subscription, the scammer tells them they will walk them through cancelling and sends a link for the victim to click on.
MSP stated that one victim was told they were getting a refund of $600 and was accidentally refunded $6000 instead. The suspect requested gift cards to refund them the difference.
