MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan University issued new health guidelines last week.

In an open letter on Thursday, CMU President Bob Davies announced the university’s new “Protect yourself, protect others” plan.

Under this plan, vaccinated students can upload their proof of vaccination to the CMU Healthscreen app to opt out of COVID–19 testing. Students who choose not to get vaccinated must undergo weekly COVID–19 testing to help stem spread in the university.

President Davies told WBKB the plan accommodates vaccine hesitant students while keeping public health in mind.

“Having safety and a healthy environment allows for the appropriate discussions — to allow for individuals who may not want to get vaccinated now, but who are still interested in finding more information and finding solutions for themselves. We didn’t want to say ‘you’re not welcome here at Central Michigan University.'”

The university will also continue its mask mandate, which Davies mentioned as a third pillar of COVID management alongside vaccines and testing.
