Alpena, Mich. — A fire overtook Clark’s Laundromat on Thursday evening.

Alpena City and Township Firefighters responded to the call just after 6:30 p.m. Smoke filled the air as the laundromat burned internally. No one was inside the building when the fire started. The structure did stay fairly intact, but the damage done inside had firefighters calling it a total loss.

Owner Terry Johnson has operated Clark’s since 1995 and worked there prior to owning it. She had just locked up and went to visit a grave at the cemetery, when she received the news about the fire.

“You’ve just got all of these mixed feelings going on,” said Johnson. “It’s a loss, but what can you do?”

Firefighters are still investigating what caused the fire. As for Johnson, she does not plan on reopening the business. The other loss in this fire was her equipment for making cookies. Johnson is known for making outstanding baked goods.
