City and Township of Alpena find staffing solution

ALPENA, Mich. — Alpena City and Township officials have agreed on a short-term staffing contract to resolve a manpower shortage at the Northside Fire Department. Officials met Monday, Dec. 28 to discuss a solution to the fire department’s staffing shortage.

After a series of announced resignations and retirements, the Township fire department is left with only one full-time firefighter, and the chief, while they hire and train replacements.

According to Township Supervisor Nathan Skibbe, city council voted and agreed on a short–term staffing contract of the Northside Fire Department.

Also discussed at Monday’s meeting was the addition of a fire department Ad hoc committee comprised of two trustees, two members of the public, two remaining members of their fire department, and an advisory role.  The committee is in place to help the fire department identify their strengths and weaknesses, as well as, advise on the restructuring of the fire department.
