ALPENA, Mich. — An Alpena Junior High student is in the hospital after being struck by a car.

Emergency workers responded to a call around 7 AM at the intersection of Hobbs and South 3rd Avenue.

The driver of an SUV made a left–hand turn while the student was crossing the road.

Because of low light and poor weather, the driver didn’t see the student until it was too late.

Undersheriff Erik Smith said this intersection is a frequent problem

“It’s unfortunate it was a kid. And it’s unfortunate that it’s so dark around there. There’s a traffic problem around there that’s been around since the start of the school year. And it needs to get resolved.”

An ambulance took the student to Mid-Michigan. Undersheriff Smith said their injuries are not life–threatening.
