Au Sable Canoe Marathon sees new record time, breaks 1994 record

OSCODA, Mich. — Matt Meersman and Jordan Wakeley saw the checkered flag 13 hours and 54 minutes after starting the 2021 Au Sable Canoe Marathon, the fastest time for the marathon since 1994.

Canoes started in Grayling around 9 p.m. on Saturday night, July 24th. On Sunday morning, the winners were in. Wakeley, out of Grayling, and Meersman, from South Bend, Indiana, both say it’s an honor to not only win, but go down in Au Sable history as well.

“Just to win the marathon is so special,” said Meersman, after winning. “But let alone setting a record at the same time. I’ve been doing this for 15 years, and I could never imagine this.”

They also said the win feels special because of some setbacks they faced prior to the race.
