Astronomer tells his story
ALPENA, Mich. — Happy National Space Day! To celebrate, we spoke with Alpena’s resident astronomer.
John Winckowski operates the Besser Museum Planetarium. He said the stars always fascinated him as a child. However, he didn’t think it could ever be more than a hobby. It wasn’t until winckowski entered college that his outlook changed.
“I realized that I could just take classes and make a career out of being an astrophysicist — that it was very well possible and I was already on my way to doing so.”
Winckowski said he pursued work with planetariums because he loves to share knowledge of the skies.
He hopes kids aim for the stars, because becoming an astronomer or astronaut is more possible than ever before
