Applications open for next downtown mural

ALPENA, Mich. — Downtown Alpena has opened applications for its next mural.

Anne Gentry, Executive Director of the Downtown Development Authority, said artists of any age can apply. The only restriction is that the applicant must have experience working on large surfaces.

She said you can find the application online and pitch your painting with a sketch, description, or rough draft. Building owners can also file applications to host the mural.

However, Gentry said there are some exceptions.

“As far as locations go, we don’t like to see historic brick painted over. But we do want one that’s in good condition and visible. The murals do need to be free of controversial topics, violence, or anything inappropriate.”
