An unusual Mother’s Day celebration

ALPENA, Mich -Today is the one day that you want to shower mom with not only gifts but hugs and kisses. but due to COVID–19 restrictions, this was not possible for those with aging parents in facilities.   Two sisters had a unique Mother’s Day with their mom.

Waving through a glass window two sisters had to blow kisses and mouth words to their mom while holding a sign that read, “We love you.”

Boots Worniak,  who has been at Medilodge of Alpena for approximately one year, kept waving for her daughters to come in.

As hard as it was, Jane Fortner and her sister, Susan Decker, had to explain as best they could that they were unable to do so.

Jane had a series of emotions at today’s visit but she’s thankful to the facility for accommodating them as best as they were able.

She reflected back on this past January when they were able to celebrate their mom’s 100th birthday and how so much has changed since that time.

Jane is thankful to Medilodge for arranging Skpe, Facetime, and sending pics during the COVID–19 pandemic but she is already planning her visit after restrictions are lifted.

We spoke with Life Enrichment Director, Kathy Klimek, about the unusual Mother’s Day at Medilodge and she said giving out carnations and pie to all of the mothers today seemed to make them happy.  She also added that patients are being tested and thankfully tests are coming back negative.
