Alpena’s Summer Movies By The Bay Returns Friday With A Roar

Members of the Thunder Bay Film Society help hoist the screen for the first "Summer Movies by the Bay on Friday."

Alpena- Prepare to head to a prehistoric time on Friday at the Bay View Park for the first edition “Summer Movies by the Bay.”

Jurassic Park will take over the Alpena Band Shell this Friday at sundown or 9:07pm. A special dinosaur will be visiting from Dinosaur Gardens to help folks get into the spirit of the film.

The fourth year event will feature three films this year, down two from last year. For Board Member Raymond Brege, the move will help the small yet effective Thunder Bay Film Society that puts on the films each year.

“You focus it down to three movies that we think will get a good turnout,” said Brege, “instead of spacing them all out throughout the year and we are of limited manpower.”

In the past years, the team had found that more movies created inconsistent crowds. Some nights, the band shell would be filled with families. Other nights would see just a couple folks come out. With three films, members of the organization think this will be the way to go from here on out.

This year’s lineup includes Jurassic Park (1993) this Friday, The Lion King (1994) on June 15, and Wonder Woman (2017) on July 6. For the Wonder Woman showing, a superhero parade will take place from Bob’s Bullpen to the band shell. People are encouraged to dress up in superhero fashion.

Dinosaurs will “invade” Bay View Park on Friday for Jurassic Park.

As year four approaches, Board Member George Ralston is excited to help offer films that entertain the community and invite folks to partake in the culture of film. Ralston has been with the Thunder Bay Film Society since it’s inception back 2014. He believes parents and grandparents will feel nostalgia and remember their days as a youngster.

“People compared it to when they were kids and their parents would take them to the drive-ins,” said Ralston, “they’d bring their own munchies and pop with them and their blanket. They’d sit out their with their kids and everybody just enjoys it.”

All screenings are free and open to the public. Popcorn will be for sale. For more information, click here to visit the Facebook page.
