Alpena’s Kennedy Ellis gets another crack at states

ALPENA, Mich. — The Alpena Wildcats girls’ golf team wrapped up their season on Monday. The team was in Traverse City where they competed in the Big North Conference Championship. However, one Alpena golfer will get the opportunity to play this Friday at Forest Akers Golf Club. For the second year in a row, Kennedy Ellis (First-team All-Big North Conference) will be heading down to East Lansing to compete in the Michigan High School Atheltic Association (MHSAA) State Finals.

“It’s an amazing accomplishment that I get to go back to states and compete,” said Ellis. “Kennedy is a hard worker,” said head coach Tate Skiba. “I’ve never met anyone that is willing to put so much time outside of practice than she has.”

For Division 2, Ellis placed 23rd overall in last year’s state finals. She shot a 93 in the first round, followed by an 83 to close out the tournament. However, this years’ state finals will only consist of one round instead of two.

“I’m very fortunate that I got out everything I did last year,” said Ellis. “I struggled the first day and came back the second day. With that, I know I can come back and fix my mistakes and can go on to play a great round. “I really want to shoot somewhere in the ’70s. That’s a super high goal I have for myself and I’m ready to achieve it.

The senior’s scheduled tee time is set for 9:30 a.m.
