Alpena Wildcats are short-handed but strong

Alpena — The Wildcats are short-handed but strong for the 2018 football season. Three-year Head Coach Aaron Sims has seen the improvement in his 30-man roster during the off-season. Last year the green and white finished (2-7) and lost to Escanaba, whom they will face in their 2018 home opener. This year there is more chemistry between the upper and lower classman.

Alpena faces a tough Big North Conference and senior running back/outside linebacker Logan Guthrie knows this years team has brought a stronger level of energy.

“We’ve never had so much build up to where people just wanted to put on the pads and start knocking heads,” said CMU verbal commit Guthrie. “It was good to see that everyone is ready to fight this year.”

The Wildcats start the season with a 4-way quarterback battle, and Sims likes what he has seen so far.

“Their footwork is great,” said Sims. “They have soft feet on the keep-out stuff and they’re getting to all their hand-offs, so it’s really cool to watch it develop.”

Alpena’s defense is full of veteran experience and it seems that’s where the green and white are tougher and more confident.

“Everyone has to be conditioned and know their role on defense,” said Junior Middle Linebacker Jordan Schultz.

For the Wildcats’ a (2-7) record is in the past. This years team has new drive and determination that can help them succeed in the Big North Conference.

“All the positive energy and everyone wanting to be here to hit and have fun,” said Guthrie. “That turns the whole program around.”
