Alpena took down the Gaylord Blue Devils to move on in District Playoffs 48-42

ALPENA, MI – It’s only been a few days since the Alpena Girls Basketball squad won their first District Title in almost 21 years. Now tonight, the Alpena guys team started off their playoff journey with a 1st round match against the Gaylord Blue Devils.

Gaylord hadn’t won a single Big North Conference game but they would look towards a new strategy in this game. First up, Ryan Voltz gets it to Luke Young. Young then finds Easton Srebnik behind the line. Easton for three and he’s got it. He was back in the starting lineup for Devin Lamey and Easton finished with 6 points.

Now for Gaylord, Luke Enders finds a lane to drive in and make the solid layup.

That new gaylerd strategy turned out to be the Blue Devils double teaming Cooper Bright in the first half. Despite Cooper having trouble finding good looks, his teammates took advantage of the double team. Austin Prue wide open behind the line goes for three and sinks it.

That double team tactic would prove to be not quite perfect in practice. Austin Prue again wide open for three. He gets it to go again and Prue led Alpena with 14 points.

Austin with it again, this time finds Easton who tries for another three for the Wildcats. That one also falls for Easton.

The Gaylord defense would struggle to shut down the other Wildcats not named Cooper. Easton makes the bounce pass to Prue. He’ll try for another triple and that one is good.

Gaylord would keep the game close though in the final quarter. This time Luke Gelow finds his spot and jacks up a three. He makes that one and led Gaylord with 16 points.

Alpena back with it, Cooper finds Voltz. Ryan makes a the bounce pass behind the defender. Mason Mumford gets it and finishes off that layup off the clean assist from Voltz.

The Wildcats get the win over the Blue Devils and move on to the semi-finals. Final score is 48–42. Alpena will travel to face Traverse City Central in the next round on Wednesday.
