Alpena residents try SCUBA for first time

ALPENA, Mich.– Some people got their first taste of SCUBA diving Saturday.

Great Lakes Divers ran not only their normal SCUBA diving lessons at the plaza pool, but also their “Discover SCUBA” class.

The lessons give people a chance to learn the basics of SCUBA, from equipment to breathing techniques.

A lifeguard at the pool, Aiden Chism, was one of the day’s students.

“The instructors are really great, y’know? I had a really fun time. Swimming under water is something… It’s just always good fun to swim.”

Many long–term students were developing their skills for their final certification test.

Instructor Nick Myers said learning to dive properly takes a lot of work.

You need to develop a new sense of balance and learn how buoyancy works in your own body.

He also says there’s no better place to learn SCUBA than right here in Alpena.

“We are a world-class dive destination. We have things right outside our back door that people come from all over the world to see.”

Great Lakes Divers has a calendar on their website listing upcoming lessons.
