Alpena residents march for social justice

ALPENA, Mich.– The M.L.K. Committee of Alpena and Working for Justice teamed up Sunday afternoon.

The two groups organized a Silent March for social justice at 2 P.M. Sunday. Social distancing was observed and all attendees were wearing masks.

Organizer Eric Peterson said the march was intended to emphasize human equality.

“People [can] just see that one is one and that we’re all on this planet together. We’re all from one consciousness, we all belong exactly where we are. We all are human. We all have the right to our opinions, to our beliefs, to whatever we want. So, basically, we’re just saying ‘hey, we’re a community who supports diversity.'”

Attendees walked along Chisholm Street from Duck Park to the Alpena Bandshell, where they listened to a speech from community member Sandra Pilgrim Lewis. Lewis spoke about the history of Alpena’s many churches, and how they were founded so that sailors of different faiths would feel welcome during their stays.
