Alpena receives its first Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine

ALPENA, Mich. — An exciting and historic day at Alpena’s MidMichigan Medical Center.   The hospital received nearly 3,000 doses of Pfizer COVID–19 vaccine on Wednesday and administered vaccinations to ten of their employees.

General Surgeon and VP of Medical Affairs, Dr. Thomas Thornton, played a vital role in the logistics and distribution of the vaccine coming to Alpena.

MidMichigan’s Pulmonologist and Chairman of Medicine, Dr. Daniel Maxwell was one of the ten employees to also receive a vaccine.

Wednesday consisted of a series of events as two pharmacists were responsible for the prepping of the vaccine followed by RN, Jenny Utt, administering the shots.  Transporting the doses from Midland to Alpena fell on the shoulders of Regional VPMA, Dr. Richard Bates.  Dr. Bates likened the transport to that of the delivery of a baby.

For now the vaccinations are being distributed to MidMichigan staff but Dr. Thornton said he is hopeful that they will be given to the community in the near future.
