Alpena Plaza Pool building upgrade

ALPENA, Mich. — Alpena’s Plaza Pool is getting up there in age and friends of the pool are looking to give the outside a makeover.

In a recent Alpena County Commissioners meeting, the idea for a mural was proposed by Friends of Plaza Pool Board Member Mark Kinney.  Kinney’s idea for the mural came about in 2012 and he said  it has taken this long to find someone because it  was important to find a muralist who had a number of characteristics.  Kinney wanted to find someone who had a sensitivity to the people who make the community vibrant and drawing from that vibrancy.

Kinney met muralist Justin Nethercut on a board where they both serve and said he found his work captivating.

kinney says it was justin’s work that kinney found captivating.

The mural Nethercut painted in a Baltimore neighborhood tugged at Kinney’s heart strings.

Board President Ann Skiba said she feels adding the mural will benefit the community by beautifying the side of the building.

The pool has been in Alpena since the 1970’s.  Kinney said pools aren’t built with tile anymore which makes this one unique.

As of now, several steps still have to be taken before the mural can be dedicated.
