ALPENA COUNTY, Mich. — Troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Alpena Post were called to a residence on French Road in Alpena Township on October 31, 2020 at approximately 8:20 p.m. for a breaking and entering complaint. The homeowner was returning home after taking her children trick or treating when she saw the suspect exit her residence. The homeowner recognized the man and yelled his name. He fled the scene and the homeowner called 911.

Troopers arrived and searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect. The homeowner identified the suspect as 30-year-old James John Tanner from Alpena. The investigation showed entry was made by jimmying a door lock using a debit card. A damaged debit card was located at the scene bearing the name James Tanner. A report was submitted to the Alpena County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

An arrest warrant was issued for Tanner on November 19, 2020. At the time, Tanner was lodged in the Kent County Jail on unrelated charges.

Tanner was arraigned from the Kent County Jail by video on March 4, 2021 with the 88th District Court of Alpena for one count Home Invasion Second Degree. Tanner’s bond was set at $30,000 10% cash surety. His next scheduled court appearance on March 23, 2021.
