Alpena hockey: four wins and four shutouts through four games

Brett Ciupka and the rest of the Wildcat line celebrate following Ciupka's first goal of the season.

ALPENA — The Wildcats hockey team is off to a hot start in the 2018-19 season. Senior goalie Cooper Black has yet to allow a goal through 4 games, while senior center Kyle VanDusen and senior wing Colby Plowman have been the catalysts for the Wildcat offense.

VanDusen has scored in each of the Wildcats’ first four games, while Plowman has scored in three and earned a point in each.

Saturday’s match against Gabriel Richard put the Wildcat scoreless streak to the test. Alpena took the lead in the second period thanks to a VanDusen goal. Black had been challenged by the Pioneer attack, but consistently made miraculous saves.

In the third period, Gabriel Richard found the back of the net twice, but both goals were waved off. Brett Ciupka’s third period goal and first of the season sealed the game for Alpena.

The Wildcats are on the road both Friday (7:00pm) and Saturday (2:00pm) in Cadillac and Petoskey, respectively.
