Executive at mBank Alpena retiring in June

ALPENA, MICH— An active member of Alpena’s financial community is retiring after 17 years in the industry. Michael Mahler of mBank will be leaving his role as executive vice president and managing director of community banking at the institution. He says the job has been tough, but rewarding. He’s looking forward to settling into his new life as a retiree.

“I happened to take over the CEO position in 2008 at the time of the economic downturn and those first three years were tough emotionally, physically. It was the worst, of course, downturn since the depression. And so a lot of stress. And so part of the decision now was just stepping back away from the rigors of the day to day elements of this job”

Mahler came to Alpena in 1997 and later took over the CEO position at First Federal. His firm merged with mBank last year. He says while he’s leaving his role, he’ll still be active in the community.

“I’ll still have a role with the bank, I just won’t have an office to come to every day. I’ll be an ambassador in the community here. I’m still going to stay involved.”

Mahler says he plans to stay in the Alpena area. His last day in the office will be June 18.
