Alpena City Council votes for medical marijuana facilities

ALPENA, Mich.— Residents may have a new option to purchase medical marijuana more conveniently in Alpena. In the 5–0 vote, a new ordinance will allow two medical dispensaries to come to Alpena.

The new ordinance includes parks, churches and additional centers. All having a 250ft buffer zone. By state law, medical dispensaries can operate a thousand feet away from a school.

These areas are considered commercial districts, and operation is not allowed in the downtown and business areas of Alpena. No specific location has been decided yet, but the area space is limited. The sale of recreational marijuana was not discussed during Monday’s meeting, but board members signed off on the medical dispensaries growing, processing, transport and quality check of the schedule one narcotic.

Residents can only purchase from the center with marijuana card permitted by a medical doctor. Phase two of the new ordinance will continue march second starting at 6pm at City Hall.
