Alpena becomes first school in Michigan with dedicated courts on same floor

Sponsors check out new Alpena gym court.

ALPENA, Mich. — Alpena High School has done a first for the state of Michigan, becoming the first school to have a stand alone distinguished volleyball and basketball court on the same floor. Sponsors donated up to $6,500 to get their logo on both courts, and this just stage two of their project.

The sponsors got to to check out the floor on Monday before Alpena’s first volleyball practice on the courts, and for JV Volleyball Coach Courtney Holmes this court was very much needed.

“I walked in today. It’s incredible. Just the feeling you get when you walk in here, it feels high end and it feels exciting,” said Holmes. “It feels deserved honestly. A huge sense of pride for me.”

Sponsors such as Meijer, Bay Athletic Club, Wolverine State Credit Union, Northland Area Federal Credit Union, Biggby Coffee and HPC to name a few.

“We’re pretty happy. We want to give back to the community,” said Sergeant James Quigley. “You have opened us with open arms and this was the easiest way for us to come back in and help everyone see the school for what it is.”

This marks the end of stage two, but community members and companies can still get involved in the final stage.

“Phase three is to re-do the wall padding and the banners for the different sports, the championships that each sport has attained and then finally the window skins up above,” said Alpena Athletic Director Tim Storch. “We still are in need of donors if people want to take part in that.”

Alpena High School will accept donations and is planning on hanging up a donation board. Corporate companies who are interested in giving funds can get their logo on the wall paddings.
