Alpena Animal Control seeing increase in Large Scale Animal Neglect cases

ALPENA, Mich. — Alpena County Sheriff’s Animal Control Office has had their hands full lately, as they just rescued 42 pets from a single residence- and the issue is ongoing.

They’re called “Large Scale Animal Neglect Cases,” and the most recent one is just a glimpse of what Animal Control Officer Deputy Michelle Reid sees on a daily basis.

“We ended up with 40 cats and two dogs,” Reid said. “This is pretty common. To me, this would be sort of your small to medium large scale neglect cases.”

Reid says she has a back log of neglect cases just waiting to be tackled. The problem is, they only have so much space.

“An addition onto the shelter would be a wonderful thing,” Reid said. “I can only bring in one case at a time. There’s a lot involved. The case itself takes a while, from start to finish, and also the animals. They need homes.”

On Saturday, the Animal Control Shelter is having a pre-adoption event from noon to 4 p.m. Reid says the number one thing they need is people to adopt the pets they rescue.

“First and foremost, we need adopters,” Reid said. “As soon as these animals can get out of here, we can go rescue more.”

The Animal Control Shelter will fix your pet prior to adoption. For more information, you can visit their Facebook page.
