Alcona hangs on to beat Posen despite fourth quarter push

Antavius Mikazes points to the bench in approval following a driving lay up and 1. Alcona defeated Posen 60-55.

POSEN, MI — The Vikings hosted Alcona in a North Star Conference showdown. Alcona (1-1) entered Monday’s contest following a victory over Au-Gres Sims on December 3rd. Posen (1-1) hadn’t played since November 30th when they defeated Onaway.

The rust definitely showed for the Vikings who found themselves down 16-6 after the first quarter. Alcona won the majority of rebounds on both sides of the ball, limiting Posen’s attack.

It was more of the same for the Tigers in the second quarter as they built up a 38-15 lead.

The Vikings improved in the third quarter, but still needed a miracle for a comeback. They held Alcona to only 11 points and still trailed 49-28.

Jared Sharpe and the Vikings defense took over the game in fourth. The defense held Alcona to 11 again and Sharpe scored 18 points on five made three pointers and three free throws. Sharpe tried to play a set up role early on, but took the game into own hands in the fourth. He and Jeremy Misiak combined for 25 of Posen’s 27 in the fourth.

The comeback attempt came just short as Alcona held on to win 60-55. The win brings Alcona to 2-1 on the season, while dropping posing to 1-2.
