Alcona County promotes healthy eating

ALPENA, Mich. — A triple win for Alcona seniors and local farmers.  The Alcona County Commission on Aging is partnering with Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and Michigan Farmers Market Association to bring “Senior Project Fresh to Alcona County.  The initiative is aimed at helping older adults eat healthier as they age.

Seniors 60 years and older who qualify, receive coupons.

Executive Director Lenny Avery said seniors will receive a coupon book that they can use at local farmers markets.  Avery added that 90 percent of local  seniors admitted to not eating  fruits and vegetables.  He said the big push for this campaign is to promote healthier eating.

Avery said the additional benefit to receiving the coupons, are the workshops which include understanding portion control as well as the different food groups.

To qualify you must be 60 or older, live in Alcona County and meet income guidelines.
