AG Dana Nessel warns of rental assistance scam
LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel warns Michiganders who are struggling to pay their rent about a new scam.
The Federal Trade Commission issued a notice raising awareness of scammers offering tenants help paying rent while stealing their personal and financial information. With many Michigan residents finding it difficult to pay rent during COVID–19, scammers are looking to capitalize on that hardship. They offer assistance in the form of rent and utility payments or legal aid to avoid eviction.
Nessel said those facing eviction are more than likely to fall victim to this scam. She said never give your bank account, debit card, credit card or social security numbers to anyone who contacts you without independently verifying the identity.
