ACC Men win first home game of the season, Ladyjacks fall short

It's all smiles for the Lumberjacks after earning their first home win of the season.

ALPENA — It’s been a tough season for the Alpena Community College (ACC) men’s and women’s basketball teams. Each team has only managed one win on the season against Lake Superior State University’s junior varsity teams.

The women were within reach of Wayne County trailing by as little as 4 points during the game. The Ladyjacks didn’t have an answer for Wildcat Donnetta Colbert, who posted an impressive 31 points in the winning effort. The ACC women fall for the sixteenth time this season following their 78-58 loss to Wayne County.

The Alpena men entered the game with the same 1-15 record as the women, though they were determined to have a different outcome. The Lumberjacks changed their pregame music from modern rap to some of AC/DC’s best hits and changed their plan of attack.

The ACC men have played conservatively to start games, but played more aggressively and jumped to an early 4-0 lead. The Lumberjacks continued their aggressive offensive play and stout defense throughout the first half. The strong defensive effort resulted in two shot clock violations and a 32-23 lead.

ACC jumped as far out as 45-31 in the first few minutes of the second half, but ran into trouble. Wayne County responded with a 16-2 run to tie the game at 47. Alpena never trailed, though the Wildcats would tie the game at 56 with just under three and a half minutes to go.

Following a Tristan “Big Country” Smith layup and one, Alpena grabbed the lead and never looked back. The Lumberjacks win at home for the first time this season 70-63.
