ALPENA, Mich. — The Alpena Social District officially opened Friday.
The district allows visitors to buy an alcoholic drink and walk with it outdoors. It encompasses most of downtown and reaches out to include Bayview Park.
Resident Marie Myers told WBKB she thinks the social district will enhance Alpena’s downtown culture.
“I think it’s absolutely beautiful. It gives everyone a chance to get together in the community. All the buildings are beautiful, the shops are coming in, and the bands that are playing for the block parties are a lot of fun. We come down every week.”
There are a few rules for the social district. Patrons, for example, can’t bring their drinks into businesses without a liquor license.
Businesses serve their drinks in recyclable cups, and you can dispose of them in newly–installed recycling bins.
The district is open seven days a week, from 11 am to midnight.
