A few more clouds late-week; Getting muggier by Memorial Day

High temperatures today ranged from the middle 50s at the shoreline in Harrisville to nearly 80 degrees in Atlanta. With a light breeze from the southeast, it’s typical to have cooler temperatures at the shoreline, and noticeably warmer values west of Alpena. The afternon high in Alpena reached 70 degrees.

We will have a mix of sun and clouds over the next couple of days. The instability causing showers and thunderstorms over Nebraska and Kansas today will move into our area Sunday. Over the second half of the weekend, a few scattered showers will be possible.

Overnight lows will cool to the middle 40s, then morning temperatures will be in the 50s. A light breeze from the southeast will keep afternoon temperatures a little cooler at the shoreline while afternoon highs approach 80 degrees west of Alpena. Highs will reach near 72 degrees in Alpena, 78 in Atlanta, and 66 in Tawas City. Partly cloudy skies are expected Friday afternoon.

Dew points are going to be in the 50s Friday and Saturday, so the humidity levels are going to be comfortable. Dew points indicate how moist the air mass is, and can be used to asses how comfortable or how muggy it’s going to feel. It’s going to feel more muggy Sunday and Monday — dew points will approach 60 on Sunday and rise to the lower 60s on Monday. The dew points are expected to drop Tuesday, so it will feel a little fresher then.

Highs Friday afternoon will be in the lower 70s with partly cloudy skies. Saturday will have a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the lower 70s. Scattered showers will be possible Sunday morning and afternoon as a more humid air mass moves in. Temperatures are expected to get close to 80 degrees on Memorial Day with a decent chance of showers/thunderstorms. By the way, if the temperature hits 80 degrees on Memorial Day, that will be the first time so far in 2020. The last time it was 80 degrees at Alpena airport was September 21, 2019.
